自動詞＋副詞＋前置詞（１）

自動詞は目的語を取りません。副詞は修飾語です。前置詞は目的語を取るので、全体で他動
詞の働きをします。

■catch up with ～ ～に追いつく
＝  overtake ～
overtakeには「～を追い抜く」の意味もある。

■put up with ～　～をがまんする
＝  tolerate ～, bear ～, endure ～, stand ～

■look up to ～　～を尊敬する
＝  respect ～

⇔　■look down on[upon] ～　～を見下す
＝  despise ～

■do away with ～　～を廃止する
＝  abolish ～

■keep up with ～　～に遅れずについていく
keep up with the times　時勢に遅れずについていく

このup to ～は「～に達して」。
come up to ～は「～に近づく」という意味もある。

■go in for ～　（スポーツ・趣味）をする
go in for golf ゴルフをする

■look back on[upon] ～　～を回顧する

■come home to ～　～に痛切に感じられる
homeは「痛烈に」。
bring[get] A home to B AをBに痛感させる
